Sinopse
7 in 1 collection by Naja
GIGAWING GENERATIONS/. 3rd in the series and unfortunately not as great as shooter fans had hoped. this is a port of the Taito Type-Xarcade original and it lost one very important thing in the translation process - a tate mode. the game is squashed into a horrible little window making everything on screen very hard to see. this, however, may not be a bad thing as the visuals are pretty ropey - awful 3d textures make for a very rough looking game, which isn't what you need when faced with screens absolutely chock full of bullets. it's a real shame as the core game is pretty good, much along the lines of the previous 2 games (see the Dreamcast section), although a less visceral experience. if you can find it cheap then definitely pick it up as there is some fun to be had here, however make sure you have played versions 1 and 2 to death first.
DODONPACHI DAI OU JOU/. a psuedo sequel to/remix of previous donpachi games. looks brilliant and throws ridiculous amounts of bullets at you. worth buying just for the replay dvd you get with it - prepare yourself for a display of zen shooting skills.
ESPGALUDA/. well Cave have done it again. yet another beautifully crafted bullet-fest. if you've played either of the last 2 Donpachi games then you'll know what to expect here. ridiculous weapons, bucket loads of enemies and mesmerising bullet patterns. the huge bonus with this game is that it's easier than many other Cave games and has a simple, logical scoring system. so if you're rubbish at hard games like me, you'll love this.
GRADIUS V/. there's only one word to describe this game......Incredible. it's a Gradius game so you'd expect it to be great, it's also developed by Treasure so expectations for this game prior to release were high. the final release has surpassed all expectations I had. the graphics are fantastic, the music is great and the gameplay expertly balanced. Easily the best shooter of 2004 and definitely a contender for Best Shooter Ever. it really is that good.
RAIDEN III/. a long awaited and well received 3rd installment in the fantastic Raiden series. updated with fairly nice 3d visuals but still in a 2d vertical plane this game delivers pretty much what you'd expect - it's still Raiden but updated to look a bit more modern. great gameplay and still tough as old boots, this is a really fun shooter to play. the bright green 'Toothpaste Laser' has to be seen to be beleived. there's also a mode which allows you to play as both player 1 and 2 with one joypad. strange....but true.
Homura-Countless games have been set during the Warring States period of Japan when clans fought for control of the entire country. Taito's vertical shooter Homura is also set in the fractious period with but the historic backdrop is secondary to the shooting action which is reminiscent of Psikyo's Sengoku Blade where the hero is capable of blasting shots and attacking with a sword. The original arcade hardware was based on a Taito Type X which sports a Celeron running at 2.5GHz and pipes video through a stock AGP Radeon 9200SE with 128MB of onboard ram. Overkill specs for a 2-D vertical shooter? Absolutely... but Homura shows no slowdown despite the amount of enemies and shots that roll, rotate, and swirl on screen. Even on the PS2 conversion, there's no slowdown for an excellent home conversion of the coin-op original. The game mechanics are fairly routine with players controlling a hero who battles wicked generals who all morph into mighty demonic alter-egos. The "O" or "SQUARE" button blows out shots while the "X" or "TRIANGLE" button swings a sword. The sword may be used to reflect and deflect enemy shots right back at them for a added bit of strategy and high scoring tactics.
Contra: Shattered Soldier may be destined to become the most noble commercial failure on PlayStation 2. You see, we love this game, and yet at the same time we know that so many modern gamers will hate it. It does everything wrong when it comes to success in the modern market -- it is well-made in a classic style, it has a tight graphics engine with minimal overdone flash, and it is harder than hell.Focus for the moment on the hard part. There are three difficulty levels in Shattered Soldier: Easy, Medium, and Hard. These gradations don't correspond to changes in the challenge presented by the game itself, however, so much as they limit the number of continues available. Easy mode offers near-unlimited continues, while Normal and Hard drop it down to three or less. "Fine," you think, "I'll play it on Easy." Nice try, kiddo -- the game only gives you a legitimate ending on Normal mode. Just to give you an idea of the challenge involved, the author first completed the game after expending about three dozen continues. We, of course, enjoyed every minute of this, and enjoyed a good laugh afterward while contemplating the screaming that will accompany the game's release. If you are a dedicated follower of classic shooters, the more demanding and precise the better, you should enjoy it too. But wimps most definitely need not apply, nor even come anywhere near this game.
